The Actors Studio

History

The Studio opened on October 5, 1947, through the initiative of Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis, who wanted a sustained environment for actor development away from immediate commercial pressures. Lee Strasberg (Lee Strasberg) joined the leadership in 1951 and directed much of the Studio's artistic work until his death in 1982, helping to shape its reputation for intensive psychological and behavioral technique.

Activities and approach

Members meet in closed "sessions" to present scenes, receive critique, and experiment with process. The Studio emphasizes truthful behavior, concentration, and exercises adapted from Stanislavski-derived practice; its training encourages personal exploration and ensemble feedback. It is not primarily a degree-granting institution but an ongoing professional laboratory where actors, directors and writers refine their craft.
