Psocoptera — booklice and barklice
Psocoptera, commonly called booklice or barklice, are small, often winged insects (1–10 mm) that feed on fungi, algae and detritus; they have ancient origins and diverse ecology and taxonomy.
Overview
Psocoptera is an order of small insects commonly known as booklice, barklice or barkflies. Members of this group are typically 1–10 millimetres long and may be winged or wingless. They feed mainly on fungi, algae, lichen, pollen and other microscopic organic matter. Some species are synanthropic (associated with human dwellings), where they are called booklice because they may consume mould and starches on paper, books or stored foodstuffs.

Psocopterans have chewing mouthparts, long filamentous antennae and relatively soft bodies. Nymphs resemble adults (incomplete metamorphosis). Common morphological features include:
- Head with a well-developed clypeus and simple eyes (ocelli present in many species)
- Winged forms with two pairs of membranous wings, when present
- Small size and delicate appearance, often with cryptic coloration
History and classification
Fossil records show psocopteran-like insects from the Permian period, indicating a very ancient lineage. Historically treated as an independent order, Psocoptera is sometimes discussed in modern classifications alongside parasitic lice under the broader grouping Psocodea; they are often regarded as among the more primitive hemipteroid insects. Current estimates recognize over 5,500 described species in about 41 families divided into three main suborders.
Ecology and behavior
Most species live on tree bark, leaf litter, or vegetation where they graze on microflora; others inhabit buildings. They play a role in nutrient cycling by breaking down fungal growth and detritus. Reproductive strategies and life cycles are generally typical of hemimetabolous insects, with eggs laid in crevices and several nymphal instars before adulthood.
Interaction with humans and notable facts
While usually harmless, certain synanthropic species can damage books, wallpaper and stored products by consuming the moulds and adhesives that affect these materials. They are not the same as parasitic lice that feed on vertebrate blood.
