Prospero Grech — Maltese Augustinian theologian and cardinal

Biography and formation

Grech entered the Order of Saint Augustine and devoted his life to study and teaching. Over decades he worked in Rome and elsewhere, combining monastic life and scholarly activity. His work emphasized the early Christian writers and the recovery of patristic sources for contemporary theology.

Academic work and the Augustinianum

He was a co-founder of the Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome, an institution dedicated to the study of the Church Fathers and early Christian literature. The Augustinianum became an international center that trains scholars and clergy in patristics, textual research and historical theology. Grech’s scholarship and administration helped shape the institute’s curriculum and reputation.

Roles, interests and influence

Throughout his career Grech combined pastoral concerns with historical theology. He published and lectured on patristic exegesis, the history of doctrine and the spiritual heritage of the Augustinian tradition. He was respected for bringing scholarly rigor to questions of faith and tradition, and for mentoring students from different countries.

Cardinalate and later years

On 18 February 2012 he was elevated to the College of Cardinals, a recognition of his long service to theological education and the Church. In his final decades he continued to encourage patristic studies and to participate in academic life until his death on 30 December 2019 at the age of 94.
