History and development

Birgu's prominence rose sharply after the Knights Hospitaller established themselves on the island in the 16th century. During and after the Great Siege of 1565 the town gained importance as a military and naval hub and later received the honorific title "Città Vittoriosa." Over subsequent centuries Birgu evolved through periods of Ottoman threat, British rule and the industrializing port activity of the modern era. It also suffered damage in World War II and has since undergone careful restoration.

Key landmarks and institutions include:
