Historical development

Afghanistan's governance has alternated between monarchy and republic. A republic was proclaimed in 1973 and, after periods of conflict and regime change, republican institutions again governed from 2001 until 2021 following international intervention and state reconstruction efforts.

2021 collapse and subsequent status

In August 2021, following a rapid offensive by the insurgent Taliban movement, the incumbent president, Ashraf Ghani, left Afghanistan and reported to have gone to Ashraf Ghani and later to Tajikistan in the immediate aftermath. After the capital fell and the presidential complex was occupied by Taliban forces, the institutions of the 2001–2021 republic ceased to operate effectively. On 6 September 2021 the office was declared abolished by the new authorities, and the legal and diplomatic status of head-of-state functions has since been contested internationally.
