Plans are two-dimensional technical drawings that convey form, arrangement, dimensions and construction or fabrication instructions for buildings, machines and sites, following standard conventions.

Plans are two-dimensional drawings used to describe the layout, form, dimensions and relationships of a place, structure or object. They communicate how something should be built, assembled or serviced and provide a common reference for designers, engineers, contractors and fabricators. Typical elements of a plan set include a title block, sheet number, revision history and general notes. Plans specify scale, dimensions, line weights, symbols, legends and material or finish schedules. Views commonly shown are plan views (top-down), elevations, sections and enlarged details. Tolerances and annotations indicate acceptable variation for manufacture or construction.

Major types and purposes

  • Architectural plans: floor plans, elevations and sections that define space, circulation and finishes.
  • Engineering plans: structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing layouts that show systems and loads.
  • Site plans: property boundaries, grading, utilities, access and landscaping.
  • Shop and fabrication drawings: detailed part geometry, assembly instructions, welds and tolerances for manufacture.
  • Schematics and diagrams: functional representations of systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) emphasizing connectivity rather than exact scale.

History and digital evolution

Manual drafting with ink and tracing paper was standard until the late twentieth century; blueprints and diazo copies provided durable reproductions. Computer-aided design (CAD) changed production, enabling precise, repeatable drawings and layered files. Building information modeling (BIM) and 3D models now integrate geometry with metadata so plan sets can be extracted from coordinated digital models.

Reading, standards and uses

Reading plans requires familiarity with symbols, scale and notation; key uses include permitting, cost estimating, coordination of trades, construction and fabrication, and legal record keeping. Common digital formats and conventions (PDF drawings for review, native CAD or DWG files for editing, IFC for BIM exchange) support collaboration. Clear, standardized plans reduce errors, disputes and rework during construction or manufacturing.
