Overview

Oki Province (隠岐国, Oki no kuni) was an island province of Japan composed of the Oki Islands, located off the northwest coast of Honshū. Administratively it formed one of the historical Japanese provinces and was long treated as a distinct maritime district. Its territory is now incorporated into Shimane Prefecture in the modern prefectural system.

Geography and neighboring lands

The Oki Islands sit in the Sea of Japan, facing the Sea of Japan coast of the main island of Honshū. The island group lies off the old provinces of Izumo and Hōki, and its maritime position shaped local economy and transport. The province was centered on several rugged, volcanic islands; the largest island historically hosted the provincial capital near the port of Saigō, which served as the main settlement and administrative hub.

History and administration

Oki entered the classical provincial framework of Japan and continued as a recognized kuni until the Meiji-era reorganization when provinces were replaced by prefectures. Its island character meant governance combined maritime oversight with periodic direct control by central authorities. Because of its remoteness and natural defenses, Oki was also used at times as a place of political exile; famous historical figures were sent to the islands during medieval and early modern conflicts.

Legacy, culture and significance

Today the Oki Islands retain a distinct identity within Shimane Prefecture and are appreciated for coastal scenery, fishing traditions, and cultural links to the San'in region. The old provincial capital site near Saigō remains a focal point for local history. The province’s past as an insulated island district, its role in national politics as a site of banishment, and its enduring maritime communities are common subjects of regional studies and tourism.
