Ñuble Region

Geography and administrative structure

Ñuble occupies a section of south-central Chile that stretches from the coastal lowlands across a fertile central valley toward the foothills and Andes. The landscape includes rivers, agricultural plains and volcanic highlands, notably the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex. Administratively the region is divided into three provinces; these are commonly listed as Diguillín, Itata and Punilla. Each province contains several communes that manage local affairs.

History and creation

The region was officially created on 6 September 2018, following a political process that recognized the area's distinct identity and needs within the national territorial organization. The change aimed to bring administrative services closer to residents and to encourage regional development, improving planning and investment decisions that previously had been managed from a larger neighboring region.

Economy, culture and importance

Ñuble is known for productive agriculture and livestock; its valleys support cereals, fruit orchards, vineyards and dairy farming, while forestry and artisanal industries are also present. Chillán is a cultural center with markets, historic sites and festivals. The region has significance in national history and identity: Chillán is associated with important figures in Chilean independence and local traditions remain strong in rural communities.

Notable features and tourism

Visitors are drawn to thermal baths, mountain scenery and winter sports around the Nevados de Chillán, as well as to rural tourism that highlights local food and crafts. The Ñuble River basin provides scenic routes and opportunities for fishing and outdoor recreation. As a recently constituted region, Ñuble continues to develop its institutional capacities and public projects to support sustainable growth.
