Geography and climate

Nubra occupies an elevated, cold‑desert environment with stark contrasts: river oases and green fields bordered by rocky slopes and sand dunes. Altitudes in the valley generally range around 3,000–3,500 metres. Summers are short and cool, while winters are long and severe; many high passes leading into the valley are closed by snow for months each year.

History and culture

The valley has long been a crossroads between the high Tibetan plateau and Central Asian trade routes. Its culture is predominantly Tibetan Buddhist, reflected in monasteries, chortens and local festivals. Diskit Monastery and several smaller gompas serve as religious and cultural centers. The name Ldumra survives in local usage and literature.
