Role and responsibilities

The Foundation does not itself select laureates. Instead it manages the endowment and supports the independent prize-awarding bodies that do: for example, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, the Swedish Academy and the Norwegian Nobel Committee. History and legal basis

Alfred Nobel's final will, dated 1895, provided for a fund to pay annual prizes to those who "have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." The will led to legal and practical work to create a stable organisation; the Foundation was formally created in 1900 to give the prizes a secure financial and administrative base. Its statutes and governance have evolved, but its core task remains the stewardship of Nobel's legacy.

Finances and administration

The Foundation manages the capital donated under Nobel's will, investing to preserve purchasing power and to provide a return that funds the annual prizes and associated activities. It publishes financial and governance reports and oversees the logistics of the prize ceremonies held each year in Stockholm, while the Peace Prize ceremony takes place in Oslo. The institution also maintains museums, archives and educational outreach related to the prizes and their laureates.

Prizes, scope and distinctions

The original prizes specified by Nobel cover physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. A later prize in economic sciences — formally the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel — is awarded alongside the original prizes but was not part of Nobel's will. The Foundation's role is administrative and financial; it does not make the award decisions.
