Geography and major islands

The Nicobar group stretches roughly north–south and comprises several inhabited and many smaller uninhabited isles. The most prominent are:

• Car Nicobar (administrative center)
• Great Nicobar (southernmost large island; includes Indira Point)
• Little Nicobar, Nancowry, Teressa, Katchal and others

These islands feature coastal plains, tropical rainforest, and surrounding coral reefs. Their remoteness influences weather, transport and settlement patterns.

People, culture and access

The district is sparsely populated and home to indigenous communities such as the Nicobarese and the Shompen, each with distinct languages, cultures and customary lifestyles. To protect these communities and their environment, access is controlled: permits and special permissions are required for many visitors and researchers.

Biodiversity and conservation

Nicobar supports high biodiversity: evergreen forests, mangroves and rich coral ecosystems. Parts of the district are designated for conservation, and the islands host rare and endemic species, sea turtle nesting sites and important bird populations. Conservation efforts balance ecological preservation with the needs and traditions of local people.

History, events and strategic importance

Human settlement on the Nicobars is ancient. In modern times the islands experienced contact with colonial powers and were occupied during World War II. The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami caused severe damage and lasting geographic and social impacts in the district. Today, the Nicobars are also remarked for their strategic position along regional sea routes; government and security agencies maintain a presence to support safety, disaster response and maritime surveillance.

Economy and contemporary issues

The local economy is largely based on subsistence agriculture, fishing, copra and small-scale crafts. Development is constrained by remoteness, environmental protections and the priority to safeguard indigenous communities. These factors make Nicobar district a region of unique cultural and ecological significance within the broader Indian maritime domain.
