Nellis Air Force Base

History and name

The installation began as a wartime airfield during World War II and expanded in the postwar period to accommodate evolving aircraft and training needs. It was named in honor of William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas native and P-47 pilot who was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge. Over the decades the base has adapted runways, ranges, and support facilities to meet the demands of modern fighter aircraft and integrated training operations.

Mission, units, and aircraft

Nellis supports a broad mix of missions including air-to-air and air-to-ground training, weapon systems evaluation, tactics development, and public demonstration flying. The base is home to the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration squadron and hosts a variety of combat aircraft, historically including fourth-generation fighters and more recent fifth-generation types such as the F-22. Nellis also houses aggressor and adversary units that replicate potential opponents’ tactics, enhancing readiness for U.S. and coalition forces.

Ranges and exercises

A defining feature of Nellis is its access to extensive training airspace and live-fire ranges. The Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) provides some of the largest contiguous air and ground ranges available to the Department of Defense, enabling complex, multi-domain scenarios. Flag-series exercises such as Red Flag bring together allied and partner nations for realistic, high-intensity training that emphasizes coalition integration, command and control, electronic warfare, and survivability against advanced threats.

Facilities and infrastructure

The main base footprint covers roughly 11,300 acres. Much of the surrounding land remains undeveloped desert used for training and safety buffers, while the developed areas include runways, hangars, maintenance shops, munitions storage, and housing. In addition to the main installation, a network of auxiliary fields and support sites extends the training reach; a nearby auxiliary airfield long associated with the complex was redesignated Creech Air Force Base in 2005 after decades of service as an auxiliary field.

Community, environment, and economy

Nellis plays an important role in the Las Vegas region, contributing to the local economy, employment, and infrastructure. Training and testing activities bring international participants and advanced aircraft to the area, reinforcing interoperability with allied air services. The base and local stakeholders work together on land use planning, noise management, and environmental stewardship to balance operational requirements with community concerns and resource protection.

Public engagement and events

Nellis hosts air shows and public events that showcase aviation capabilities and community relations. Such events offer opportunities for public education about military aviation, aviation safety, and recruiting.
