Overview

Matthew John Robinson (24 October 1985 – 21 February 2014) was an Australian para-snowboarder who competed on the international IPC World Cup circuit. Robinson earned attention for winning a milestone gold medal for Australia on the adaptive snowboarding scene and was regarded as one of his country's promising winter-sport athletes. His career and sudden death in 2014 prompted national coverage and tributes from the winter-sports community.

Career and achievements

Robinson's most notable achievement was winning what has been reported as Australia's first IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup gold medal in a snowboard event at Copper Mountain, Colorado. That victory represented a breakthrough for Australian athletes in para-snowboarding, a discipline that was growing rapidly on the international roster administered by the International Paralympic Committee for alpine events. He raced on venues across the World Cup circuit and helped raise the profile of adaptive snowboarding in Australia.

Accident and death

In February 2014 Robinson suffered head and neck injuries in a crash at the La Molina ski resort in Spain. He was stabilized and placed on a flight bound for Australia for further treatment and recovery. While the aircraft made a scheduled refuelling stop in Kuwait, Robinson suffered a cardiac arrest and died on 21 February 2014 at the age of 28. The circumstances combined the earlier sporting injury with an unexpected medical emergency during repatriation.

Legacy and memorials

Robinson's death was followed by public remembrances in Australia. A memorial service was held in Perth, Western Australia on 7 March, where family, friends and members of the winter-sports community gathered to pay tribute. At the time of his passing he was living in Melbourne with his fiancée. His gold medal and international results remain an early highlight in Australia's para-snowboard history, and his story is often cited in discussions about athlete safety and medical response during international travel.
