Artashat (Artaxata), Armenia

Origins and name

The settlement was established in the 2nd century BC by King Artashes I (Artaxias I) and became one of the principal seats of the Armenian monarchs. The name Artashat derives from Iranian linguistic roots and is often interpreted to mean a rejoicing or blessing associated with the name Arta; classical writers referred to the city as a planned royal capital of the newly independent Armenian kingdom.

History and archaeological remains

Artashat was an important political, economic and military centre of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia, serving as a capital for several centuries. Excavations in and around the modern town have revealed fortress walls, citadel remains and traces of urban planning that reflect its role as a Hellenistic-style royal city adapted to local traditions. The site illustrates layers of occupation from antiquity through medieval periods.

Modern city

Today Artashat is a regional urban hub with a mixed economy; industry, processing of agricultural produce from the surrounding plain, and services form the backbone of local activity. The population is concentrated in a compact urban core with residential neighbourhoods, municipal institutions and transport links connecting the city to Yerevan and other parts of Armenia.
