Arsène Tchakarian: French‑Armenian Resistance member and historian

Early life and background

Tchakarian was born into an Armenian family in what was then the Ottoman Empire. Like many Armenians of his generation, he left the region and settled in France, where he trained and worked as a tailor. Living in the Paris area, he joined political and labor networks that opposed fascism and occupation during the 1930s and 1940s.

Resistance activity and the Manouchian Group

During the German occupation of France, Tchakarian became a member of the FTP‑MOI (Francs‑tireurs et partisans — Main‑d'œuvre immigrée), a section of the Communist resistance made up largely of foreign‑born workers. He belonged to the cell commonly known as the Manouchian Group, named after its commander Missak Manouchian. The group carried out armed actions and sabotage against occupying forces and was later targeted by propaganda campaigns aiming to discredit immigrant resistants.

Postwar life, testimony and historical work

After the war Tchakarian returned to civilian life as a tailor but remained engaged in preserving the memory of the resistance. He provided testimony to researchers, took part in commemorations, and worked to ensure recognition of the contribution made by immigrant fighters in the struggle against Nazism and collaborationist authorities. In later decades he was often consulted by journalists and historians studying the period.

Legacy and death

Tchakarian was widely reported as the last surviving member of the Manouchian Group, a role that made him an important living witness to a complex chapter of wartime history. He died in Villejuif, France, on 4 August 2018 at the age of 101. His life is remembered for the intersection of immigrant experience, anti‑fascist action and postwar efforts to document and teach the history of the Resistance.
