Marcel Rigout — French Communist politician and Minister of Vocational Training

Early life and political affiliation

Rigout was born in Verneuil-sur-Vienne and developed his political career in the context of post‑war French labour and communist movements. He remained aligned with the PCF, known in French as the Parti communiste français, and worked on issues connecting the party’s social objectives with practical policies for workers and apprentices. His local roots in the Limousin region informed his attention to regional training and employment matters.

Minister of Vocational Training (1981–1984)

Appointed following the left's electoral victory, Rigout led the ministry tasked with improving access to vocational pathways at a time of economic change. His tenure is generally associated with a push to strengthen the institutions and opportunities that link education, training and the labour market. Areas of emphasis included:

• expanding apprenticeship and workplace-based training opportunities;
• improving access to retraining for the unemployed and displaced workers;
• developing partnerships between schools, employers and local authorities;
• raising the social and career recognition of vocational qualifications.

These priorities reflected broader left‑wing goals of combining social justice with economic policy aimed at reducing unemployment and improving skills.

Writing and later life

Beyond politics, Rigout engaged in cultural and literary activity. In 1983 he published the novel L'autre chance, which drew attention to his interests beyond administration. After leaving ministerial office in 1984 he continued to be active in public life and remained associated with debates over education, training and social policy. He died on 23 August 2014 in Limoges at the age of 86.
