Overview

Marcelino Perelló Valls (1944 – 5 August 2017) was a Mexican political activist and figure in left-wing student politics. Born in Mexico City, he rose to prominence during the Mexican Student Movement of 1968 and served as the representative of the School of Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to the National Strike Council (Consejo Nacional de Huelga, CNH). He remained affiliated with the Mexican Communist Party (Partido Comunista Mexicano, PCM) from 1965 until his death.

Role in the 1968 student movement

Perelló was active in the nationwide mobilization that demanded political and educational reforms in 1968. The movement coalesced into a coordinating body, the CNH, which brought together delegates from universities and preparatory schools to plan strikes, demonstrations and negotiations. The CNH became widely known for articulating student demands and organizing peaceful protest actions in the months that preceded the government's violent crackdown in October 1968.

Affiliations and activities

As a delegate for UNAM's School of Sciences, Perelló participated in assemblies and interschool coordination that were central to the CNH's deliberations. His membership in the Mexican Communist Party placed him within a broader tradition of leftist politics in Mexico; the PCM and similar organizations were significant actors in student and labor struggles during the mid-20th century. Perelló's involvement combined campus organizing with participation in national debates over democracy, civil liberties and university autonomy.

Legacy and later life

After 1968, Perelló continued to be associated with left-wing political circles and remained publicly known for his connection to the student movement. Whether through party activity, interviews, or participation in commemorations of 1968, he was part of ongoing efforts to remember and interpret that period of Mexican history. He died in Mexico City on 5 August 2017 at the age of 73.
