Overview
Lyman County is a county in the United States located in the south-central part of the state of South Dakota. Its administrative center and county seat is Kennebec. The county was created in 1873. According to the 2010 census, 3,755 people lived there. The county is predominantly rural, with land uses tied largely to farming, ranching and open-space uses common to the Great Plains.
Geography and environment
Lyman County contains a mix of rolling plains, river valleys and agricultural fields. The Missouri River and its associated reservoirs and tributaries influence local soils and irrigation. The landscape supports mixed-grass prairie and riparian corridors that provide habitat for regional wildlife. Forested areas are limited and most of the county is used for crop production or grazing.
History and development
Established in the late 19th century, Lyman County developed along transportation routes and near river crossings that were important to settlement and trade. Towns in the county grew as service centers for surrounding farms and ranches. Over time, improvements in transportation and consolidation of agricultural operations have reduced the number of small independent farms while maintaining the county’s role in regional food production.
Communities and notable places
Besides the county seat of Kennebec, Lyman County includes several small towns and unincorporated communities that serve local residents. Recreational areas along rivers and public lands provide hunting, fishing and boating opportunities. Protected and reservation lands also contribute to the county’s cultural and ecological landscape.
Demographics, economy and government
The county’s population is sparse compared with urban counties; the 2010 census figure of 3,755 reflects a low population density. The local economy is based primarily on agriculture, including grain and livestock, with supporting services in retail, education and government. County government administers roads, public safety, courts and local land-use planning, and interacts with state agencies for regional services.
Transportation and services
Lyman County is served by a network of state and county roads that connect farms and towns to larger regional centers. Public services are concentrated in Kennebec and a few other towns; residents often travel to nearby larger cities for specialized medical care, higher education and some commercial needs.
