Lou Bega

Lou Bega (* 13 April 1975 in Munich as David Lubega) is a German Latin pop singer. He is particularly known for his song Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of ...).

Life and career

Bega's Ugandan father and Italian mother had both come to Germany in the 1970s. As a teenager, he spent a few years in Miami. There, as a 16-year-old, he released the single I Need You! on Virgin Records in 1991 under the pseudonym A.R.T. feat. Moe D. Cay.

Breakthrough

After his return to Munich he met the manager Goar Biesenkamp. In joint work with the composer Christian Pletschacher alias "Zippy" and the producers Achim Kleist and Wolfgang von Webenau, the song Mambo No. 5 was created. The song is a cover of the song of the same name by Pérez Prado from 1952, to which Bega added lyrics and a new chorus melody. At the time of the song's production, it was not clear whether the song would be released at all.

Mambo No. 5 became a worldwide hit in the summer of 1999. In Germany, it spent eleven weeks at number one in the single charts and achieved double platinum status. It went on to top the charts in over 20 countries, including France, the Netherlands, the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Finland, Norway and Sweden. On the US Billboard charts, the single rose to number three. In total, the single sold over eight million copies worldwide. The accompanying album A Little Bit of Mambo also reached number one in numerous countries and number three and triple platinum in the USA.

His second single, I Got a Girl, reached the top 20 on the charts in five countries. The third single Tricky Tricky reached number 18 on the Canadian and number 75 on the US Billboard charts. It followed at number eleven on the French charts with the track Mambo Mambo.

In 2000 Bega received the German music award ECHO in two categories and was nominated five times. He was also nominated for the Grammy and in Cannes he was awarded the World Music Award. Prizes like "Blockbuster Entertainment Award" in Los Angeles, "Festival Bar" in Verona/Italy, the "Amadeus Award" in Vienna as well as a third place at the "Bunte - New Faces Award" in Berlin followed.

Due to the huge success of the first album and especially his hit single, Lou Bega is often referred to or perceived as a one-hit wonder, which angers the musician: "Of course, every other song besides Mambo No. 5 is a failure."

Further career

Lou Bega recorded the theme song and a music video for the computer game The Jungle Book by the Walt Disney Company.

The album Ladies and Gentlemen features, among other things, the duet Baby Keep Smiling, which Lou Bega recorded with the now deceased Cuban artist Compay Segundo of Buena Vista Social Club.

In May 2010, the album Free Again was released, from which the singles Boyfriend and Sweet Like Cola were released. They reached number 71 and 37 respectively in the German charts. In 2013, the album A Little Bit of 80's followed, on which he covered pop hits such as Culture Club, Sade Adu and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Bega has also worked as a composer for the German dance project Groove Coverage since 2002. So far he has contributed to thirteen songs of the band. His most successful composition for Groove Coverage was the song God Is a Girl from 2002. To date, the band has sold well over 13 million records worldwide.

Live shows and performances

His numerous concerts include a tour of the USA with Cher, where Bega appeared as a "special guest", performances in South America and on the Indian subcontinent. Bega has also repeatedly performed for international companies, princes and at corporate events. He was booked by the Moroccan King for a birthday party. Lou Bega has been a guest on many US television shows and specials, including The Tonight Show, Ally McBeal, Motown Live, Jenny Jones and The Queen Latifah Show. On Wetten, dass... Lou Bega was the only artist - with Mambo No. 5 - to sing a song twice.

Other

In 2010, a legal dispute arose between Bega and Perez Prado's heiress over the question of the rights to use Mambo No. 5: Bega and his co-author Pletschacher unsuccessfully demanded a declaration that they were jointly the sole authors of the hit.

Bega got married in Las Vegas in 2013. He is the father of a daughter and lives with his family in a house in Berlin-Zehlendorf. He was baptized as a Christian. He tells in an interview that since then his inner emptiness has been filled.
