Overview

Lincoln County lies in the far northwest corner of Montana and is a largely rural, mountainous area. The county seat and largest town is Libby, and the region had a population recorded by the 2010 Census at about 19,687 residents. The county was created in 1909 and named in honor of Abraham Lincoln.

Geography and environment

Lincoln County is characterized by steep forested ranges, river valleys, and national forest lands. Major waterways and reservoirs provide habitat for fish and wildlife and for outdoor recreation. The landscape supports logging and scattered agricultural use, while extensive public lands include wilderness and recreation areas.

History and development

The area developed around timber, mining and the railroad during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The county government was established in 1909; historical settlement patterns followed rivers and rail corridors. For detailed historical summaries see county history resources.

Economy, towns and communities

Local economy has traditionally relied on timber harvesting, small-scale mining, and services for residents and visitors. Besides Libby, other communities include smaller towns and unincorporated settlements that serve as gateways to trails and public lands. For county services consult the county seat or regional planning pages.

Public health and notable facts

A notable and widely reported chapter in local history involved asbestos-contaminated vermiculite mining centered near Libby, which led to a major public-health and environmental response including federal cleanup actions. That episode has influenced medical screening, land-use policy and community advocacy in the region.

Recreation and significance

Visitors and residents use the area for hiking, hunting, fishing, skiing and boating. Forests and mountain landscapes attract recreationists and support a conservation ethic among many locals. For maps and travel planning see regional and state resources such as location and visitor information.
