Lago di Vogorno (Verzasca Reservoir)

Physical characteristics

The lake lies in a narrow alpine valley with rocky shores and clear, green-tinted water typical of mountain rivers carrying fine mineral sediments. The reservoir follows the course of the Verzasca river and creates a long, narrow basin. Water levels fluctuate seasonally according to energy demand and snowmelt.

History and construction

Construction of the Verzasca Dam took place between 1961 and 1965 as part of regional efforts to expand hydroelectric capacity after World War II. Creation of the reservoir required engineering works on the river channel and the building of access roads and power installations. The dam transformed the local landscape and enabled regulated electricity production.

Uses, management and environment

The main function of the impoundment is to store water for the downstream hydroelectric system and to help manage seasonal flows and flood risk. Management seeks a balance between power generation, water supply, ecological needs and recreational use. The clear waters and surrounding rock formations support local biodiversity typical of montane river environments.

The area around the reservoir attracts visitors for hiking, photography and scenic viewing. Direct access to dam infrastructure is restricted for safety and operational reasons. Visitors are advised to follow posted signs and local regulations. Some nearby trails and viewpoints provide safe panoramas of the lake and the dam works.
