Wooden plows and the cast-iron implements common at the time tended to clog, requiring frequent cleaning and making plowing slow and laborious. Observing the needs of local farmers, Deere sought a solution that combined durability with an improved surface finish to resist soil adhesion.

Invention of the polished steel plow

Drawing on an analogy with finely polished metal tools, including household items such as tailoring needles, Deere reasoned that a well-shaped, smooth metal surface would allow soil to slide off rather than cling. In 1837 he fashioned a plowshare from a broken saw blade and carefully polished and shaped it so that the curved moldboard would turn the sod and shed soil. In Moline the business expanded its product range to include other implements and attachments suited to farm work. Although John Deere later put his son Charles in operational charge, the founder continued to serve as company president and remained involved in business decisions while taking on other civic and commercial roles in the community.

Civic life and later years

Beyond his role as an industrialist, Deere participated in civic affairs in Moline. He was active in local institutions, helped to establish a bank, and served in municipal positions. These activities reflected a common pattern among 19th‑century entrepreneurs who combined business leadership with community engagement. John Deere retired from daily management in stages and died at his home in Moline on May 17, 1886. His family and the company he founded continued the enterprise into subsequent generations.
