Geography and climate

The county lies on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, positioned west of that Great Lake and southeast of the international boundary with Canada. Its landscape includes lake shoreline, river valleys such as the Black River corridor, farmland and forested uplands. Winters are notable for heavy lake-effect snow and cold temperatures; summers are generally warm and suitable for recreation on inland waters.

History and notable sites

Settled in the years after the American Revolution, Jefferson County played roles in early 19th-century conflicts and commerce on the lakes. Maritime activity and shipbuilding around Sackets Harbor were important during the War of 1812. Over time the county evolved from frontier settlement to an economy based on agriculture, trade and military support services.

Economy, population and communities

Fort Drum, a large U.S. Army installation located within the county, is home to the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and is the area's largest employer; the fort shapes local demographics, housing and services. Outside the base, much of the county is rural, with agriculture, tourism and small manufacturing contributing to the economy. The county is part of New York's Jefferson County administrative region and lies within the state's upstate area; politically it is included in New York's 21st congressional district.
