Districts and main features

• Darjeeling — a mountainous district famous for its tea estates, scenic vistas of the Himalaya and the heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Geography and economy

The division stretches from the Terai and Dooars plains up into the lower Himalaya. Soils and climate support tea cultivation, paddy and horticulture; river systems such as the Teesta and several tributaries shape irrigation and floodplain ecology. Forests and protected areas in the Dooars sustain biodiversity and tourism, while the hills attract domestic and international visitors for trekking and cultural travel.

History and culture

Historically this area combined colonial-era hill stations, princely states and zones of plantation agriculture. Ethnically and linguistically diverse communities live here, including Nepali-speaking groups in the hills, indigenous communities and Bengali-speaking populations in the plains. Cultural life reflects tea garden heritage, local crafts and a mix of festivals across communities.

Administration and significance

As a division, Jalpaiguri provides an intermediate administrative layer within the state: a Divisional Commissioner coordinates law and order, disaster response, development programs and inter-district planning. Its strategic location near international borders and its economic mix of agriculture, forestry and tourism make it important for regional development and conservation efforts.

Notable facts

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a narrow-gauge mountain line in the division, is internationally renowned. The Dooars region contributes significantly to India's tea output and supports important wildlife habitats. Development challenges include balancing conservation with growth, managing seasonal floods and improving connectivity in hilly zones.
