The Jagdterrier, formally called the Deutscher Jagdterrier, is a purpose-bred German hunting terrier. Its name literally means "German hunting terrier" and reflects a long tradition of breeding dogs for practical fieldwork rather than show-ring appearance. Jagdterriers are valued by hunters for their stamina, courage and strong scenting ability.
Characteristics
Physically the Jagdterrier is compact, muscular and built for work. Coats are typically short, dense and weather-resistant, often showing black and tan or dark liver colors. The breed is small-to-medium in size, agile, with keen senses. Temperamentally it is energetic, tenacious and highly driven to pursue quarry; handlers describe it as bold, focused and independent when working.
History and development
The breed emerged in Germany in the early 20th century when hunters sought a versatile terrier suited to native game and varied terrain. Breeders selected for hunting ability — particularly persistence in scent work and courage on scent and underground game — rather than ornamental traits. Over time organized clubs and hunting associations codified standards that emphasize functional performance.
Because the Jagdterrier was developed as a working dog, its behavior differs from many companion-only terriers. It excels at tracking, flushing and pursuing quarry in cover and often will work both above and below ground. These instincts make the breed an effective aid for vermin control and for recovering wounded game after driven hunts.
Training and management require consistent, confident handling. Early socialization, firm boundaries and plenty of physical and mental exercise help channel the breed's high prey drive. Jagdterriers respond well to scent work, field trials and active sporting outlets; they are generally not ideal for owners seeking a low-energy or very passive companion.
Health-wise the breed is typically hardy, with relatively few breed-specific conditions reported when kept in appropriate working condition. Regular veterinary care, a balanced diet and ample exercise are important to maintain fitness and longevity.
