Hunza River (دریائے ہنزہ) runs through the Hunza region in Gilgit‑Baltistan, in northern Pakistan. The river is primarily fed by glacier and snow melt from the high mountains of the Karakoram range and forms an important drainage channel for several upstream valleys.

Sources

  • Khunjerab River
  • Gujerab River
  • Misgar River
  • Chapursan River
  • Shimshal River

These streams join together to create the main Hunza channel; each tributary is supplied largely by glaciers and seasonal snowfields in the surrounding high terrain.

Course

From its headwaters the river initially flows south toward the Nagar area, then swings west. Near Chalit the Hunza turns again to the south and passes through the Nomal Valley. Continuing downstream it reaches Gilgit city, where it receives tributaries from nearby valleys, including flows from the Naltar area.

Shortly after passing Gilgit the Hunza discharges into the Gilgit River. The Gilgit River subsequently joins the larger Indus River, making the Hunza part of the Indus basin.
