Horacio Guarany (born Eraclio Catalin Rodríguez Cereijo, 15 May 1925 – 13 January 2017) was an Argentine singer, musician and writer best known for his long association with traditional folk music. Over a career that began in the 1940s he became widely regarded as one of the country's important interpreters of folklore and rural song.

Early life and career

Guarany was born in the small town of Las Garzas in Santa Fe Province. He entered the public musical scene in the 1940s and steadily built a reputation through radio, recordings and live performances. His professional name, Horacio Guarany, became synonymous with a direct, narrative singing style rooted in the Argentine countryside.

Music, themes and style

Often described as one of the most important figures in Argentine folklore, Guarany's repertoire mixed traditional forms—such as zambas, chacareras and milongas—with songs that emphasized storytelling, social observation and emotional honesty. He performed primarily as a singer with guitar accompaniment and was known for a warm, resonant voice that suited both tender ballads and more rhythmically driven numbers.

Recordings, writings and recognition

During his long career Guarany recorded around 57 solo albums and worked with major labels including Philips and EMI. His contributions to folk music were acknowledged with awards such as the Platinum Konex Award in 1985. In addition to performing, he was active as a writer and public figure, producing texts and giving interviews that reflected his cultural interests.

Legacy and death

Guarany's influence is visible in the continued presence of his recordings in the Argentine folk canon and in the many artists who cite him as an inspiration. He died on 13 January 2017 in Luján, Buenos Aires Province, from a cardiac arrest (cardiac arrest), at the age of 91. The place of his passing is often noted in biographies and reports (Luján, Buenos Aires Province).
