Homo habilis is an early species of Homo, known from East African fossils and simple stone tools (Oldowan). It shows a mix of ape-like and human-like traits and remains central to debates about human origins.

Homo habilis, named in 1964 by Louis Leakey and colleagues, is among the earliest species placed in the genus Homo. The specific name is often rendered with the descriptive phrase "handy man", a reference to its association with simple manufactured stone implements. H. habilis lived during the early Pleistocene, roughly between about 2.4 and 1.4 million years ago, and is primarily known from fossil sites in eastern Africa.

Critics point to the pronounced variability among specimens and to overlaps with late australopith morphology. Supporters argue that the species captures an important evolutionary transition, bridging more primitive hominins and the later, larger-brained members of Homo.
