Characteristics

Heterodontosaurus combined multiple dental specializations unusual among early ornithischians. The front teeth were chisel-like and likely helped crop vegetation, enlarged caniniform tusks projected from the mouth, and the cheek teeth were broad and leaf-shaped for grinding. A keratinous beak at the tip of the snout complemented these teeth, and the overall build suggests an active, agile runner.
