Overview

The Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), sometimes called Greenland turbot, is a cold‑water flatfish and the only species in the genus Reinhardtius. Physical characteristics and biology

Greenland halibut are right‑sided flatfish: during larval development one eye migrates so that both eyes lie on the right side of the head. Adults have an elongated, diamond‑shaped body with small scales and a dark upper side that helps blend with the seafloor. As a deepwater species, it tends to have slower growth and later maturation compared with many coastal fishes, traits common among fishes that inhabit cold, high‑latitude depths.
