Musical skills and style

As a vocalist Timmerman sang in a clear baritone register (baritone) and accompanied recordings and live appearances with several instruments. He played the saxophone (saxophone), clarinet (clarinet), keyboard (keyboard) and double bass (double bass). His repertoire included sentimental pop, schlager-style tunes that reached audiences in both the Netherlands and neighboring German-speaking regions, and later a program of faith-based songs.

In 1974 the couple made a public decision to embrace Christianity (conversion), which led them to focus for a time on religious songs and appearances before later returning to more general popular performance.

Later life and legacy

The couple divorced in 1999; Timmerman remarried in 2002 and his former partner Hermien died in 2003. Gert Timmerman died in 2017 after an illness attributed to pancreatic cancer. He is remembered for his distinctive voice, instrumental versatility and for the long-running public presence of the Gert and Hermien duo. His recordings remain part of the mid-20th-century Dutch popular-music heritage and continue to be referenced by fans of classic Dutch and German-language popular songs.
