Geography and climate

Doha occupies a low-lying coastal plain and is centred on a natural bay. Its climate is arid: hot, dry summers and mild winters with limited rainfall. The city's waterfront promenade, known as the Corniche, frames the Doha bay and is a focal point for public life.

Economy and infrastructure

The local economy historically relied on fishing and pearling and later on oil and natural gas. Today energy exports remain central, and Doha has diversified into finance, construction, tourism and service industries. The city previously used Doha International Airport and now is served by Hamad International Airport, a major regional air hub.

Doha hosts museums, cultural venues and traditional markets alongside contemporary towers. It is home to a dedicated area for higher education and research commonly known as Education City, where international university campuses and research institutes are located as part of broader education initiatives. English is widely used in business and education, while Arabic is the official language.

From a small fishing and pearling settlement, Doha expanded rapidly in the 20th and 21st centuries after the discovery of hydrocarbons. The city has hosted major regional and international sporting events, including the 2006 Asian Games and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which prompted significant urban investment and stadium construction. Doha also holds frequent international conferences and cultural festivals.

Doha combines traditional souqs and mosques with modern architecture and large shopping centres. Key sectors include oil and gas, hospitality and logistics; smaller traditional activities such as fishing continue on the periphery. The head of state of Qatar is a sheikh, and national institutions are based in the city. Doha has developed major research and service facilities and remains central to the country's vision for economic diversification and cultural exchange.
