Digenetic trematodes typically have a flattened, unsegmented body and a tough outer tegument that protects them from host environments. They characteristically possess two muscular suckers: an oral sucker surrounding the mouth and a ventral (acetabulum) sucker used for attachment. Most species are hermaphroditic, bearing both male and female reproductive organs in the same individual, although some lineages include separate-sex species. Their anatomy includes a simple digestive tract and complex reproductive systems that produce large numbers of eggs.

Life cycle and development

Digeneans are noted for multistage life cycles that involve one or more intermediate hosts before reaching a definitive vertebrate host. Typical stages include eggs, a free-swimming miracidium that infects a mollusc (usually a snail), sporocyst or redia stages producing cercariae, and a cercaria that leaves the intermediate host to encyst as a metacercaria in a second host or on vegetation. The metacercaria is ingested by the definitive host, where it develops into the adult fluke. This multi-host strategy facilitates dispersal and transmission between aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Ecology, health and economic importance

Many digeneans are important pathogens of humans, livestock and wild animals. Some species cause serious diseases; others reduce productivity in aquaculture and grazing animals. Beyond direct disease, digeneans influence food webs by altering host behavior and population dynamics. Because they require specific intermediate hosts, their distribution often reflects the ecology of local snail or fish species.
