Alfred Eick (9 March 1916 – 12 April 2015) was a German naval officer who commanded a U-boat for Nazi Germany during World War II. Between 1943 and 1945 he led attacks on at least eleven merchant and naval vessels and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his wartime service.
Early life
Eick was born on 9 March 1916 in Essen, then part of the Rhine Province in the German Empire. Before and after his military service he worked professionally as an accountant.
Wartime service
During the later years of the conflict Eick served as a commander of a German submarine and was directly involved in operations that resulted in attacks on multiple ships between 1943 and 1945. His actions during the war led to recognition with one of Germany's highest military honors, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
Later years and death
After the war Eick returned to civilian life and his accounting profession. He died on 12 April 2015 in Bielefeld, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, at the age of 99.
