Overview
Alfred Gomolka (21 July 1942 – 24 March 2020) was a German politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union. He played a prominent role in state and European politics after German reunification, serving as the first head of government for the re-established state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and later representing the region in the European Parliament. He was a member of the conservative grouping in European politics and served at times in national institutions as well.
Political career and offices
Gomolka led the newly formed state government following the 1990 elections and became the inaugural Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. During that period he also held the rotating office of President of the Bundesrat, the federal council that represents German Länder, from November 1991 until March 1992. His tenure as minister-president ended in 1992 amid political tensions and shifts in coalition support within the state parliament.
European Parliament
After his time in state government Gomolka continued in public office at the European level. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and served multiple terms from 1994 until 2008. In Brussels and Strasbourg he sat with the centre-right group, the European People's Party, contributing to policy debates on regional development, European integration and cross-border cooperation.
Roles, emphasis and legacy
Throughout his career Gomolka was identified with mainstream conservative positions and with efforts to strengthen the institutions of a reunified Germany at the regional level. His leadership at the outset of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's post‑1990 administration helped set administrative structures and priorities for the new state. Colleagues and commentators have noted his role in building relations between the new federal state and institutions at the national and European level.
Death and final notes
Alfred Gomolka died on 24 March 2020 at the age of 77 after suffering a fatal fall in Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. His career is remembered for bridging regional reconstruction after reunification with longer service in the European Parliament.
