Overview
Ciro Pessoa Mendes Corrêa (June 12, 1957 – May 5, 2020) was a Brazilian singer-songwriter, guitarist and poet. Born in São Paulo, he became known for his role in the city’s emerging rock scene in the late 1970s and 1980s and for later musical and literary projects. He also adopted the Dharma name Tenzin Chöpel, reflecting a long‑standing interest in Buddhist practice.
Musical career
Pessoa was one of the founding members of the influential Brazilian rock group Titãs. He took part in the band’s formative period and contributed to the scene that helped Brazilian rock gain wider attention. After departing Titãs in the early years, he continued to explore alternative sounds, most notably working with the post‑punk and gothic‑influenced group Cabine C, and pursued solo work and collaborations.
Artistic style and writing
Pessoa combined rock instrumentation with literary lyrics and occasional experimental textures. As a poet and lyricist he drew on urban imagery, introspective themes and, at times, existential or spiritual concerns. His adoption of a Dharma name indicates that Buddhist ideas and contemplative practice informed parts of his later writing and public persona.
Later life and death
In his later years Pessoa remained active as a writer and occasional performer, maintaining a presence in cultural discussions about Brazilian rock and independent music. He was reported to have been living with a serious health condition, including a battle with cancer, and he died in São Paulo on May 5, 2020 from complications of COVID-19 at age 62. His death was noted across Brazilian media and by peers in the music community.
Legacy and significance
Pessoa is remembered as part of a generation that shaped contemporary Brazilian rock and as an artist who moved between music and literature. While his time with Titãs was limited to the group’s early phase, his later projects and writings contributed to post‑punk currents and to conversations about art, spirituality and urban life in Brazil.
