Chroma key is a visual-effects technique that replaces a single-color background (commonly green or blue) with a different image or video; used in film, TV, streaming and virtual production.

Chroma key is a post-production and live-broadcast technique that isolates and removes a single, uniform color background—usually bright green or blue—to composite subjects into alternate scenes. By designating one hue as transparent, editors and real-time systems can replace that color with another image, video, or generated environment. How chroma key works

At its core chroma keying compares pixel color values against a chosen reference color and creates a matte: a mask that separates foreground (the subject) from background. Simple approaches use thresholds to decide which pixels become transparent; more advanced algorithms measure color distance, account for luminance, and build edge mattes to preserve hair and semi-transparent elements. Digital sensors' sensitivity to green has made green screens especially common, while blue remains useful where subjects contain green tones.

Equipment and setup

Successful keys depend on controlled lighting, consistent background color, and appropriate camera settings. Key elements include a wrinkle-free, evenly lit backdrop; separate lighting for subject and background to avoid color spill; and sufficient camera resolution to capture fine edges. Reflections, shiny fabrics, and motion blur are common problems that complicate the matte.

Limitations and best practices

Chroma keying is not a magic bullet. Problems include color spill (background hue reflecting onto the subject), edge fringing, and difficulty with translucent or highly detailed elements like hair. Best practices are preventative: choose contrasting colors, control lighting, avoid reflective materials, and capture clean source footage. When these measures are combined with careful post-production matte refinement, chroma keying can yield seamless composites suitable for broadcast and cinematic needs.
