Overview
The British Rail Class 114 were first-generation diesel multiple units (DMUs) constructed by BR Derby between 1956 and 1957. A total of forty-nine two-car sets were produced. Each set comprised a powered driving motor coach and an unpowered driving trailer, a formation intended for flexible operation on local and regional services. The trains were deployed on a number of secondary and commuter routes in central and eastern England.
Design and formation
Class 114 units followed the common early DMU pattern of compact two-car formations suited to lower-density services. The fleet originally carried the driving motor numbers 50001–50049 (later renumbered 53001–53049) and driving trailers numbered 56001–56049 (later 54001–54049). Interiors were arranged for short to medium journeys, with features typical of the era such as individual compartments or open seating bays, simple furnishings and manual doors. The layout allowed units to work singly or multiple-worked in pairs for higher capacity.
Service history
After introduction they were assigned to regional services in several areas. Notable areas of operation included the West Midlands, Lincolnshire and the Humberside region. Their role was primarily stopping and local passenger services feeding larger main lines. Over time they were superseded by newer second- and third-generation DMUs and by electrification on some routes, and their operational use declined through the late 20th century.
Uses and significance
Class 114 units provided an economical and practical solution for post‑war rationalisation of regional passenger services. They offered improved acceleration and operational flexibility compared with locomotive-hauled branch trains, reducing journey times and allowing more frequent local services. Their existence illustrates the shift in British regional rail operations toward multiple-unit diesel traction during the 1950s and 1960s.
