The visible plants consist of simple, leafless, dichotomously branching axes with rounded tips and terminal sporangia that produced spores. The axes are relatively small and lack complex organs such as leaves or true roots. Surface features include epidermal cells and, in some specimens, rhizoid-like structures that likely anchored the plant in microbial mats or damp soil.

Anatomy and reproduction

Internally, Aglaophyton had conducting tissue that transported water and nutrients, but these conducting cells did not show the thickened, lignified walls typical of tracheids in later vascular plants. Because of that difference, many researchers view Aglaophyton as a pre-vascular or paratracheophyte plant: it had specialized conducting cells but not true xylem. Reproduction was by spores produced in terminal sporangia; patterns of spore dispersal and details of the life cycle remain incompletely known because only the sporophyte stage has been recovered.
