Sir Michael Edward Palin (born 5 May 1943) is an English performer whose career spans sketch comedy, acting, travel broadcasting and books. He first gained wide public attention as a member of the comedy ensemble Monty Python, and later became known for film roles, original television series and a string of travel documentaries that introduced global places and cultures to broad audiences.

Early life and education

Palin was born in Broomhill, Sheffield, in what was historically the West Riding of Yorkshire. He studied modern history at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he met future collaborators and began performing in student theatre and revues. His early background in stage and sketch work formed the basis for the comic versatility he later displayed on television and in film.

Comedy and acting career

Palin became prominent in the late 1960s and 1970s as part of Monty Python, contributing acting, writing and performance to the group’s television programmes and films. After Monty Python he co-wrote and starred in projects such as the anthology comedy series Ripping Yarns and took on film roles — notably in the ensemble comedy A Fish Called Wanda. Across stage, screen and radio he is recognised for a warm, understated comic style and for playing a range of characters from whimsical to deadpan.

Travel broadcasting and writing

From the 1980s onward Palin developed a second public identity as a travel presenter and travel writer. Landmark television series include staged journeys that combined personal observation with cultural reportage, most famously a televised circumnavigation based on Jules Verne’s concept. His travel programmes mix practical travelogue, interviews, and reflective narration, and many were accompanied by well-received illustrated books that document routes, people met, and historical context.
