The Boeing VC-25 is a specialized, military variant of the four‑engine 747-200B wide‑body airliner. Operated by the United States Air Force, it serves as the primary long‑range transport for the president of the United States and other senior leaders, and it performs a range of federal government transport missions. When the president is on board, either VC-25 is referred to by the radio call sign Air Force One.
Design and characteristics
The VC-25 retains the basic 747 airframe but is extensively modified for security, communications and endurance. Key features include redundant, secure communications suites, in-flight refueling capability, and systems intended to improve survivability. Internally the aircraft is outfitted with office space, conference and briefing areas, crew quarters and a medical area that can provide emergency treatment.
Typical equipment and layout
- Communications: encrypted and wideband links to maintain contact with civilian and military networks.
- Interiors: working offices, staff seating, and areas for the president and senior advisors.
- Support systems: extended fuel range via aerial refueling and redundant power and avionics.
- Security: hardened and classified systems to protect command-and-control functions.
The aircraft is crewed by Air Force personnel trained for presidential airlift and mission support, including specialists for communications, maintenance and flight operations. Although built from a passenger airliner platform, the VC-25 functions as a mobile command center when required.
Only two VC-25 aircraft were completed for this role. They were introduced to service after modification and have been the primary visible symbol of presidential air travel for decades. Efforts to replace them have used later 747 family models as a basis for a next‑generation presidential transport to ensure continued advanced capability and security.
