The Boeing VC-25 is a specialized, military variant of the four‑engine 747-200B wide‑body airliner. Operated by the United States Air Force, it serves as the primary long‑range transport for the president of the United States and other senior leaders, and it performs a range of federal government transport missions. When the president is on board, either VC-25 is referred to by the radio call sign Air Force One.

Design and characteristics

The VC-25 retains the basic 747 airframe but is extensively modified for security, communications and endurance. Key features include redundant, secure communications suites, in-flight refueling capability, and systems intended to improve survivability. Internally the aircraft is outfitted with office space, conference and briefing areas, crew quarters and a medical area that can provide emergency treatment.
