Overview
A bogie (called a truck in North American English) is a wheeled chassis or framework that carries a portion of a rail vehicle's weight and attaches to its underframe. Most modern bogies have either four wheels (two axles) or six wheels (three axles) and are fitted in pairs beneath a single railcar, locomotive or passenger coach. By supporting the body and allowing limited rotation and lateral movement, bogies help the vehicle negotiate curves and track irregularities smoothly; for example, a freight boxcar will ride on two separate bogies.

Function and operation
Beyond simple support, bogies steer the wheelsets slightly to reduce flange wear and rail forces, and provide primary and secondary suspension stages to isolate passengers from track roughness.
