John Silver (early Genesis drummer)

Career and chronology

Silver replaced the group's first drummer; he is identified in historical accounts as the second drummer to occupy the drum stool. He became a member in the summer of 1968, stepping in after Chris Stewart left. Silver remained with the band until August 1969, when he was succeeded by John Mayhew. These personnel changes took place while Genesis—an English rock band—was establishing itself on the student and club circuit.

Recordings and legacy

Although his time in the group was short, Silver appears on the band's first full-length album, From Genesis to Revelation, and later on the archival box set Genesis Archive 1967–75. These releases document the early phase of Genesis's development and preserve performances from line-ups that predate the band's later commercial success.

Accounts of the era describe Silver's work as part of the ensemble's supportive rhythmic foundation rather than as a flashy soloist.
