Early life and family

Born during the era when his father consolidated power and founded the Pahlavi dynasty, Gholamreza grew up in a family that came to symbolize Iran’s modernization and centralization in the first half of the 20th century. He was one of Reza Shah’s children and a sibling to several figures who played public roles in Iran and in exile, including his sister Ashraf Pahlavi. His position as an elder member of the Pahlavi line gave him a particular historical perspective on 20th-century Iran.

Writings and reflections

In 2005 he published a memoir in French titled Mon père, mon frère, les Shahs d'Iran (My Father, My Brother, the Shahs of Iran), reflecting on his experiences, the personalities of his father and brother, and his thoughts about Iran’s future. The work was part personal recollection and part reflection on a period of dramatic political and social change. The book has been cited in accounts of the dynasty and in discussions of families of deposed monarchs.

Death and legacy

Gholamreza Pahlavi died on 7 May 2017 at the age of 93 from pneumonia-related complications at the American Hospital of Paris. Reports of his passing were carried by international outlets and family statements noted that, after the death of his half-sister in 2016, he had been the last surviving child of Reza Shah; contemporary accounts highlighted this fact in summarizing the end of a direct generation linked to Iran’s early Pahlavi era (reports).
