Cam Plante was born on March 12, 1964 in Brandon, Manitoba. A Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman, he combined offensive instincts from the blue line with playmaking skill in junior hockey. Plante was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round, 128th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He made two appearances in the National Hockey League during the 1984–85 season, but built his reputation primarily in junior and minor professional leagues.
Junior career and record
Plante achieved lasting recognition in the major junior ranks with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. In the 1983–84 WHL season he set a league mark for offense from the blueline by recording 140 points, the highest single‑season total for a defenceman in WHL history. That season highlighted his ability to contribute both goals and assists and to quarterback power‑play units, traits that marked him as one of the most productive offensive defensemen of his junior era.
Professional career
After being drafted by Toronto, Plante had a brief stint at the NHL level but spent most of his professional years in other North American circuits and overseas. His career included spells in lower professional leagues as well as several seasons in the United Kingdom where he played for teams such as the Peterborough Pirates, with shorter engagements at the Chelmsford Chieftains and Humberside Hawks. Following his time in Britain, Plante returned to North America and finished his playing career with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League (CHL).
Style, legacy and family
Plante was known as an offensively inclined defenceman who could generate scoring chances and contribute to transition play. His WHL scoring record remains a notable benchmark for junior defencemen in Western Canada. Beyond his playing career, his name is also associated with the next generation of hockey players: he is the father of goaltender Tyler Plante and defenceman Alex Plante, both of whom have been affiliated with NHL organizations (including the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers, respectively) during their development years.
