Overview

Alexandre "Alex" Plante (born May 9, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He has been a member of organizations in both the top North American leagues and their developmental affiliates, and has spent time with the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League. Plante was selected 15th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and made his first appearance in the National Hockey League during the 2009–10 season.

Playing career and development

Plante rose through the major junior ranks and entered professional hockey as a first‑round draft pick, which carried expectations of becoming a steady defensive presence. Like many young defencemen, his development included time in the American Hockey League to adapt to a faster, more physical professional game before and after brief NHL opportunities. His career has involved movement between the NHL club’s roster and its AHL affiliate as part of normal roster management and development.

Style of play

Plante is generally described as a stay‑at‑home defenceman who focuses on positioning, gap control and defensive zone coverage. He is not primarily known for prolific scoring; instead, his contributions are measured by how reliably he defends, clears the puck, blocks shots and makes safe outlet passes to teammates. Coaches have often used him in minutes that require defensive responsibility and composure under pressure.

Notable milestones

  1. Drafted 15th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.
  2. Made his NHL debut in the 2009–10 season, marking his arrival at the top professional level.
  3. Spent significant professional time with the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, gaining experience against veteran players.

Personal life and family

Hockey runs in Plante’s family. He is the son of former professional defenceman Cam Plante, and his brother Tyler has been involved in goaltending within the Florida Panthers organization. These connections have been part of his background and early development in the sport.

While Plante’s career did not become that of a long‑term NHL star, his path is an example of a high draft pick navigating the transition from junior promise to the realities of professional hockey, balancing time between development leagues and NHL opportunities. His experience underscores the varied trajectories professional athletes can follow after early draft selection.
