Bob Hoskins

English actor Robert 'Bob' Hoskins (1942–2014), celebrated for gritty, everyman screen performances in films such as Mona Lisa and Who Framed Roger Rabbit; stage-trained, award-winning, retired after Parkinson’s diagnosis.

Robert "Bob" Hoskins (26 October 1942 – 29 April 2014) was an English actor whose career ranged from kitchen-sink dramas to family films and imaginative comedies. He became widely known for playing tough, often working-class characters with emotional depth and dry humour. His film roles brought both popular success and critical recognition, while his stage and television work demonstrated a versatile dramatic range.

Born in Bury St Edmunds and raised in north London, Hoskins left school early and worked in a variety of jobs before finding acting. He began in local theatre and repertory companies, later moving into television and film. His early screen appearances showed a naturalistic style that directors frequently cast when a grounded, believable presence was required. He trained informally through experience rather than following a conventional conservatory route.

Hoskins’s breakthrough came with intense, character-driven films. He earned wide acclaim for his portrayal of a London gangster in The Long Good Friday and won major awards for his performance in Mona Lisa, where he played a private man entangled with a complex underworld figure. He also surprised many viewers with his performance in the inventive comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which combined live action and animation and exposed him to a broader, international audience. He worked with numerous directors and adapted to roles in dramas, thrillers and family features.

Critics and colleagues often praised Hoskins for his ability to balance toughness and vulnerability. He specialized in rendering working-class lives with authenticity, avoiding caricature while highlighting distinct local voices. Beyond his screen work, he returned periodically to stage roles and continued to accept challenging parts that expanded his repertoire. Honors during his lifetime included industry awards and academic recognition for his contribution to performance.

In late 2011 Hoskins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and announced his retirement from acting in August 2012. He died in London in April 2014, after a short illness. His death prompted widespread tributes highlighting his warmth, wit and the strong humanity he brought to many roles. Today he is remembered both for specific landmark films and for a broadly influential career that crossed genres and media.
