Overview
William Clay Ford Sr. (March 14, 1925 – March 9, 2014) was an American businessman best known as a prominent member of the Ford family and as the principal owner of the NFL franchise the Detroit Lions. He was the last surviving grandchild of Henry Ford and spent much of his life involved in the family's business interests, civic projects, and charitable causes.
Early life and education
Ford was born in Detroit, Michigan, into a family central to the modern American automobile industry. He attended preparatory schools and went on to study at Yale University, after which he returned to Michigan and took on various responsibilities within the family enterprises and affiliated companies.
Business roles and sports ownership
Although closely associated with the Ford Motor Company through family ownership and governance, Ford also pursued independent business interests. His most visible single investment was in professional football: he acquired ownership of the Detroit Lions in the early 1960s and served as the team's principal owner and chairman for decades. Under his stewardship the Lions remained a civic symbol of Detroit, and his long tenure made him one of the better-known owners in the National Football League.
Family, philanthropy, and public life
As a member of the extended Ford and Firestone families (he married into the Firestone family), William Clay Ford Sr. combined private business activity with philanthropy and local civic engagement. He supported cultural, educational, and conservation causes and maintained a public profile tied to the industrial heritage of southeastern Michigan. The Ford family continued to exert influence in automotive leadership through his children.
Death and legacy
Ford died on March 9, 2014, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, of pneumonia at the age of 88. His passing marked the end of a generation that had direct ties to Henry Ford. Today his legacy is remembered through the continued presence of the Ford family in business and philanthropy and through the ongoing ownership and stewardship of the Detroit Lions.
