Overview

Varzo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) within the Italian Republic (Italy) and the region of Piedmont (Piemonte). Situated in the north of the region, Varzo lies roughly 130 kilometres northeast of Turin and about 35 kilometres northwest of Verbania. It occupies a large mountain area close to the border with Switzerland.

Geography and population

The municipality covers an area of about 94.4 km², making it relatively extensive for its population size. In the early 21st century the resident population was around 2,200 (c.2004), concentrated in the main village and a number of smaller hamlets and mountain settlements. Varzo sits in an Alpine valley environment with steep slopes, pastures and high-altitude terrain above the valley floor.

Transport, economy and recreation

Varzo functions as a local hub for mountain roads and trails that link to passes leading into the Swiss Alps. The area’s economy is a mix of small-scale agriculture, tourism oriented to hiking and winter activities, and services that support cross-border movement. The surrounding mountains and valleys attract walkers, climbers and nature visitors, while local facilities serve both residents and travellers crossing the border.

History and cultural notes

Like many settlements in the high Alps, Varzo developed along historical routes used for trade and seasonal movement of livestock. Its cultural landscape reflects traditional mountain architecture, religious sites and seasonal pastoral practices. Local festivals and community life preserve customs tied to the agricultural and alpine calendar.

Boundaries and neighbouring communes

Varzo shares land borders with several Italian and Swiss municipalities. On the Italian side are Baceno, Bognanco, Crevoladossola and Crodo, and Trasquera (Trasquera). Across the border in Switzerland the neighbouring communes include Grengiols, Ried-Brig and Zwischbergen. These adjacencies underline Varzo’s role as a border community and a point of connection between Italian and Swiss alpine regions.

Significance and distinctions

Varzo is notable as a mountain municipality with a large territorial extent relative to its population, and for its position close to important Alpine crossings. The mix of natural scenery, traditional mountain life and cross-border links makes it representative of small communities that help sustain cultural and economic ties throughout the central Alps.
