Overview

Västerbotten County (Västerbottens län) is an administrative region in northern Sweden. The county seat is Umeå, an important cultural and educational centre. As a county, it groups together coastal and inland communities under a regional council and a county administrative board established in the 17th century (1638).

Geography and environment

The county stretches from the Gulf of Bothnia inland toward the Scandinavian mountain chain. Its landscape includes a long rocky coastline with archipelagos, large river valleys, and extensive boreal forests (taiga). Major rivers that shape the region and its economy flow to the sea and supply hydropower. The climate is subarctic to temperate coastally, with long winters inland and milder conditions along the coast.

History and identity

Västerbotten County was formed as an administrative unit in the 17th century. Its borders do not exactly match the older cultural provinces that share its name, and parts of the county overlap historically with Lapland. Indigenous Sámi communities have long lived in parts of the county, contributing to its cultural diversity.

Economy and society

Economic activity blends traditional and modern sectors. Forestry, fisheries and hydropower remain important, while mining and advanced manufacturing appear in some inland areas. The coastal towns have developed service industries and technology clusters; Umeå is notable for higher education and research, which influence culture and innovation. Population density is low compared with southern Sweden.

Municipalities and culture

The county contains several municipalities, among the largest of which are Umeå, Skellefteå and Lycksele. Towns and villages host regional festivals, museums and institutions that keep local traditions alive while supporting contemporary arts and education. Visitors encounter both natural attractions and cultural events year round.

Administration and notable facts

  • The county is governed both by a state-appointed county administrative board and an elected regional council responsible for health care and public transport.
  • Västerbotten County is distinct from the historical province of the same name; administrative boundaries have shifted over time.
  • The region combines economic uses — forestry, energy production and fisheries — with conservation of large natural areas and Sámi reindeer herding traditions.
